Community History in Kentucky

From Bhutan to the Bluegrass State

1990s - Early Displacement

Many Bhutanese families were forced to leave their homeland due to political unrest, spending decades in refugee camps in Nepal while preserving hope for a better future.

2008-2015 - Resettlement Program

The United States began welcoming Bhutanese refugees, with many families finding new homes in Kentucky through various resettlement agencies and community sponsors.

2016 - Society Formation

Recognizing the need for community support and cultural preservation, dedicated leaders founded the Bhutanese Society of Kentucky in Louisville to serve growing families.

2017-Present - Growth & Impact

Today, we serve over 500 community members across Kentucky, providing essential services, cultural programs, and advocacy while building bridges with our Kentucky neighbors.

Bhutan, known as Druk Yul (Land of the Thunder Dragon), is a small Himalayan kingdom renowned for its unique approach to development through Gross National Happiness, environmental conservation, and cultural preservation.

Our community in Kentucky carries forward the essential values of our homeland: respect for nature, strong family bonds, spiritual mindfulness, and the belief that true prosperity includes both material well-being and spiritual contentment.
